The formulas

How it works, step by step

=B3*B2/100
A percent of a number. Multiply the number by the percent and divide by 100: 15% of 80 is 80 × 15 / 100 = 12. Typed directly, =80*15% gives the same answer, because the % sign divides by 100.
=B3*(1+B2/100)
Add or take off a percent. Adding 15% is multiplying by 1.15, so 80 becomes 92. Taking 15% off is multiplying by 0.85: =B3*(1-B2/100) gives 68. This is how prices with tax and discounts are worked out.
=B9/B10
What percent one number is of another. Divide the part by the whole: 30 / 120 = 0.25. Give the cell a percent format to read it as 25%, or multiply by 100 if you want the plain number.
=(B15-B14)/B14
Percent change. Take the new value minus the old one, divided by the old one: (92 − 80) / 80 = 15%. A negative result is a decrease. Always divide by the starting value, not the new one.
On live data

The same formula on your Sheets data

The share of a store's sales that comes from one vendor, read live from its order lines: the same part-of-a-whole formula, on a whole table.

Sheets for Sheets

=data.order_lines.sum(net_amount, vendor, "Acme")/data.order_lines.sum(net_amount)
Sheets reads the table live from the connected account: no export, no copy-paste, and the result updates when the data does.
FAQ

Questions

How do I figure out a percentage of a number?

Multiply the number by the percentage, then divide by 100. For 15% of 80: 80 × 15 = 1,200, and 1,200 / 100 = 12. In a spreadsheet that is =80*15/100 or =80*15%.

How do I work out what percent one number is of another?

Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. 30 out of 120 is 30 / 120 = 0.25, which is 25%.

How do I calculate a percent change?

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. From 80 to 92 is (92 − 80) / 80 = 0.15, an increase of 15%. From 250 to 200 is −20%.

What is the difference between percent change and percentage points?

Percentage points are the plain difference between two percentages: a rate going from 10% to 12% rose by 2 percentage points. As a percent change it rose by 20%, because 2 is 20% of 10.

Why does adding 10% and then taking 10% off not give the original number?

The second percent is taken of a bigger number. 100 plus 10% is 110, and 10% of 110 is 11, so you end at 99. To undo an increase, divide by 1.10 instead.
